PETALING JAYA: A new management team is headed into the New Straits Times (NST) and Berita Harian (BH) newsrooms at Balai Berita following recent boardroom changes at its holding company Media Prima Bhd.

After Media Prima’s annual general meeting last month, former Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd group editor-in-chief and executive director Datuk Johan Jaafar was appointed as the new executive chairman.

Johan replaced Datuk Abdul Mutalib Mohamed Razak. Media Prima owns 43% of NSTP and all the free-to-air television networks like TV3, NTV7, TV8 and TV9.

According to industry sources, former Business Times editor Zainul Ariffin is expected to be promoted to group editor-in-chief for the New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd. Zainul, who writes a column in NST on Wednesdays, will replace current group editor-in-chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Aun and has been tasked with overseeing the editorial policies of NST and BH.

Besides Zainul, former NST group editor Datuk Ahmad Talib will return as the executive editor of Media Prima. Ahmad, who started his career in 1972, has had stints with national news agency Bernama, Business Times, BH and NST before leaving to join Maxis Communications Bhd in June 2005.

The former Malaysian Press Institute chairman is currently a media strategist and blogger.

Besides the group’s publishing business, major changes are also expected in Media Prima’s flagship television network, TV3.

TV3 Group managing director and chief executive officer Abdul Rahman Ahmad already announced on May 15 that he would be relinquishing his post in August. He will be succeeded by TV3 CEO Datuk Amrin Awaluddin.

Changes are also likely in Utusan Melayu. Former Utusan Melayu group editor-in-chief Datuk Khalid Mohd is expected to replace Datuk Kamaruzaman Zainal in newsroom operations in TV3.

Kamaruzaman was press secretary to Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi before his appointment to TV3.
