Nestle will use only eco-friendly palm oil by 2015

ZURICH: Nestle SA said it will use only “certified sustainable” palm oil as a raw material for sweets and dairy products when enough is available by 2015.

The decision by the world’s biggest food producer follows a detailed review of its palm oil supply chain, the Vevey, Switzerland-based company said on Monday in a statement on Hugin newswire.

Greenpeace has accused Nestle and Unilever NV, the world’s second-largest consumer products business, of ignoring the destruction of Indonesian peatlands to make way for palm plantations, which contributes to the release of greenhouse gases. Indonesia and Malaysia supply almost 90% of the world’s palm oil, Nestle said.

Palm oil is also used for the production of biofuels, Nestle said, adding it has “repeatedly spoken out” against the use of fuel made from materials also used to produce food. — Bloomberg
