KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Bhd has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) in an effort to promote mobile learning in universities.

Under the MoU, Maxis will provide LUCT students and lecturers with Apple iPhone 3Gs bundled with special prepaid and postpaid plans to facilitate learning on the go.

"With the growth in uptake of advanced mobile devices and data services — the way we change and connect is being rapidly transformed.

"Our alliance with LUCT gives tertiary level students a larger participation within this expanding borderless landscape," said Maxis vice-president and head of enterprise and carrier business division Mohamed Fitri Abdullah at the signing ceremony today.

LUCT vice-president of international development Datuk Dr Jayles Yeoh said the college had developed a portal which would make it possible for the students to access their timetables, examinations and results through the iPhone.

Yeoh also said LUCT would incorporate application development in the university's curriculum in the near future.

"We expect 2,000 students who enrol this year will take up the phone while it is optional for our current 10,500 students in Cyberjaya and Kuching," he said.

On another matter, Fitri said Maxis was testing new mobile devices for a possible rollout to the Malaysian market.

"We need to make sure that all the devices are at a certain quality level to ensure that we can provide end-to-end management in terms of technical help and sales," he said, when asked if there were plans to bring the Android smartphone here this year.
