Chalco, Smelter Asia in US$1b smelter project in Sarawak

PUTRAJAYA: An aluminum smelter costing US$1 billion, with an annual production capacity of 330,000 tonnes will be developed in the Samalaju Industrial Park by Smelter Asia Sdn Bhd.

Smelter Asia said on Tuesday, Feb 8 it has obtained the necessary licence from the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (Miti).

Smelter Asia is a joint venture between Group Capital Sdn Bhd (GIIG Capital) and Dubai Aluminium Co. (Dubal).

GIIG Holdings Sdn Bhd, the parent company of GIIG Capital, had on Tuesday signed a heads of agreement with the Aluminium Corporation of China Ltd (Chalco) to jointly develop, own and operate the aluminium smelter.
