KUALA LUMPUR: The Industrial Production Index (IPI) in December 2009 rose 8.9% from a year ago, as manufacturing picked up and electricity usage rose.

The Statistics Department said today that month-on-month, the IPI increased 4.6%. It added the IPI for November 2009 was revised to negative 0.8%y-o-y.

The IPI for 4Q2009 increased 2.9% from a year ago. The index 2009 declined 7.6% when compared with 2008.

Manufacturing output in December 2009 increased 12.9% from a year ago. Output for November 2009 increased by 1.6% (revised) from a year ago. As compared with the preceding month, the output for December 2009 increased 3.3%.

When compared with 4Q2008, manufacturing output for 4Q2009 increased 5.1%. The annual manufacturing output for the whole of 2009 fell 9.8% from 2008.
