Pikom's National ICT Month to address key issues

PETALING JAYA: Pikom, the National ICT Association of Malaysia, will be organising a major event for the Malaysian ICT Industry via its National ICT Month (NIM) 2009 from July 20 to Aug 20.

In a statement, Pikom said with the initiative, it hoped to achieve its objective of further creating awareness, generating demand, and addressing issues and opportunities represented by its theme of ICT — The Enabler of New Success.

It said NIM had various programmes in place to benefit businesses, government, academia and society across Malaysia.

"I am confident that Pikom's National ICT Month will do its fair share of good, benefitting and serving the business ecosystem and communities in the bigger and smaller towns and cities throughout Malaysia. These, in return, will definitely increase the ICT interest among Malaysians from all walks of life," said David Wong Nan Fay, chairman of Pikom.

He said Pikom anticipated a decline in spending on the consumer side in the near term as experienced in its first nationwide edition PC Fair 2009.

Wong said although the numbers of visitors had gone up by 6%, buying power among consumers was down by about 10%. "We believe this downtrend will continue throughout the year in line with the government's outlook of a negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth of negative 4% in 2009," he said.

"Pikom is calling for organisations to take advantage of the opportunities of this downturn to upgrade and improve processes and service delivery infrastructure to operate with higher efficiency and lower cost structures.

"During NIM 2009, businesses can seek out offerings and solutions provided by local ICT vendors in order to familiarise and evaluate what best suits the requirement of individual business objectives. We hope to spur the domestic ICT industry recovery through NIM 2009," said CJ Ang, president of Pikom.
