KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia's policy will focus on giving access to financing for now it but does not rule out another round of overnight policy rate(OPR) cut.

BNM governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the central bank would, at this point, focus on giving access to financing, given that the country's interest rates were already in historical lows.

However, she said the central bank would not rule out the possibility of reducing the OPR, if need be, as the external environment was still uncertain.

"We will review the outlook of the economy from time to time, and from then, we will decide on the interest rates," she said at a press conference of the Malaysia-UK Islamic Finance Forum.

Zeti added BNM had received inquiries from interested banks for the Islamic and conventional banking licences offered to large-capitalised and specialised players.

Out of the several inquiries received, there are at least two consortiums of foreign and local banks were keen in the banking licences, she said.
