KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd expects its newly launched low-cost courier, named Redbox, to contribute RM25 million to RM30 million revenue to the group next year.

Its group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said on July 9 the courier service, which would offer 50% lower shipment rates than the market's, targeted at the small and medium enterprises and individual customers.

Redbox's low-cost model was made possible as it would leverage on AirAsia's existing network and infrastructure, such as online transactions, Fernandes told reporters after the launching ceremony here on July 9.

"Our tie-up with DHL and MBE (Mail Box Etc) also allows us to use their infrastructure," he said.

He added that 11% of AirAsia's total aircraft belly space had been allocated for cargo.

For a start, Redbox offers services between the central region of Peninsular Malaysia and some cities in East Malaysia.

Fernandes said Redbox would in early next year expand to all the other destinations that AirAsia and AirAsia X fly to.
