Bargain hunting in a downturn — what consumers are looking for

With penny-pinching in vogue due to the economic climate, more consumers are looking for bargains. Identifying what is most important to them may provide marketers with valuable insights into consumers’ minds.

Research firm Euromonitor scanned the searches on online help site Ask.com to see what deals consumers wanted most. Heading the Top 10 list last year was cheap airline tickets. Coupled with the fifth most popular search — deals on hotels — it may indicate that even when looking to save, consumers still make travel a priority.

Used cars, cheap apartments for rent, and auto insurance deals came in second, third and fourth. These, and cheap petrol (10th) are expected as they cover the basic necessities. But the sixth top search — cheap prom dresses — may raise some eyebrows.
Finally, online flea-markets like eBay are likely to benefit from searches like discount theme park tickets (seventh), restaurant coupons (eighth), and used textbooks (ninth).

The report concluded that consumers are becoming more cautious and price-sensitive and are willing to devote more time and effort to researching their purchases online.
