This week Media Monday discovers that moving pictures on newspapers may soon be a reality. In Malaysia, those who feared the implementation of an  Internet filter can breathe a sigh of relief. On a lighter note, the CEO of Twitter and his wife shared the birth of their son with the world on -- what else -- Twitter of course.

Harry Potter paper?
A cheap plastic flexible electronic screen has the potential to bring the magical Daily Prophet from fiction to life. Designed by scientists at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, the roll-up  A4-sized “intelligent plastic” display is the first screen to be made from a cheap plastic (not silicon) microchip. Unlike e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle, the touch-screen will  allow for moving images. Plastic Logic, the company behind the device, will launch the device early next year in the US for about US$299.

Internet filter to block porn, says Malaysia
Those worried about the implementation of an Internet filter in Malaysia would be pleased to know that the Cabinet decided on Aug 12 to scrap any such plans. Earlier on Aug 7, Information, Culture and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim reassured the public that the proposed filter would not be used to curb political dissent, but critics pointed out that such a filter went against the Multimedia Super Corridor's Bill of Guarantees, which promises no Internet censorship.

According to a Reuters news report on Aug 12, however, Rais dismissed reports of any such Internet filter, saying that three ministries have only been asked to study alternative means of policing sedition, fraud and child pornography on the Internet. "They have been tasked to look into the matter and report back on finding a better approach in solving the matter," Rais said.

However, documents of a tender for an Internet filter seen by Reuters issued out by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) appears to contradict Rais's statement.

Twitter CEO & wife tweet birth of son
From first contraction to birth, Evan Williams, CEO of Twitter and his wife, Sara, kept the world updated on their son’s birth on Aug 11 with the drama starting Monday night. One wonders if Sara called Evan or counted on this tweet, “Dear Twitter, My water broke. It wasn't like Charlotte in Sex and the City. Now, timing contractions on an iPhone app,” to inform him she was going into labour. Happily, at 1pm, she delivered an eight-pound, 21-inch baby boy, the details Tweeted by Evan. The full story can be found here. Next up from the couple -- baby’s name, first tooth, first step, and probably, first girlfriend...
