7.28pm: A total of 438 people were arrested up to 6pm, including 37 women and 38 juvenile, says KL Police Chief Datuk Mohd Sabtu Osman.

7.02pm: Police are expected to wrap up operations in the city after prayers tonight. Police source said under a thousand officers were deployed, all from KL. He said police were in the city by 5am in anticipation of the rallies.

7pm: Earlier reports about detainees taken to Cheras was untrue, said KL Legal Aid lawyer. Some of those detained were taen to Dang Wangi Contingent HQ (Pudu jail).

6.52pm: All quiet at Masjid Negara, and the hundreds of protesters seeking refuge have dwindled in numbers. Dang Wangi OCPD just arrived. Police sitting around chatting.

6.32pm: Pedestrians hanging around Central Market, some shops opened. No groups of protesters visible in that area but a handful of police keep watch.

6.26pm: Helicopters still flying over the city, and many FRU trucks still at Dataran Merdera but most major streets which saw rally chaos look empty.

6.23pm: All quiet around Dataran Merdeka. A group of tourists from Spain, when met nearby, expressed shock at the police presence and road blocks.

"We had no idea this was going to happen. It all seemed okay yesterday. What's the problem?" one of them said.

6.19pm: Polish tourist Kasia, 23, said: "This is my first trip to Malaysia. It was a coincidence. I got tear-gassed and had to get held. I didn't know it would be this bad."

6.11pm: Hatta Ramli leaves PAS headquarters with group in tow.

6.08pm: Masjid Jamek LRT station closed. A sign on the shutters cited technical problems. Anti-riot police and FRU trucks have retreated, but the stench of tear gas stays near the station.

6pm: Several FRU trucks have left the Sogo area, says eyewitness, after an earlier street duel with thousands of protesters. Unsure how many trucks and police personnel remain at Sogo.

Meanwhile, anti-riot police and FRU trucks at Masjid Jamek still on high alert to quash any possible regrouping.

5.57pm: A convoy of six FRU trucks and jeeps roll out of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, heading to Dataran Merdeka but likely going elsewhere. There is heavy police presence at Dataran Merdeka already.

5.53pm: Mamak eateries along Jalan Tun Perak near Masjid Jamek close in a hurry. Air is still electric as police still keep a watchful eye on a street that is almost empty.

5.50pm: A pertahanan ambulance just has been called to Masjid Jamek area. Reason unknown. Hundreds shuffling out of Masjid Jamek into the station.

5.49pm: Police now screaming at people looking from the LRT station. Traffic gridlock as FRU trucks move in. Road was momentarily opened before they moved in.

At the PAS headquarters, a black Maria ferries the police away.

5.47pm: Four FRU trucks and 50 officers outside Masjid Jamek facing Pudu station direction are on standby. Chanting can be heard from across the police. Commuters slowly shuffling into LRT station.

5.45pm: FRU still spraying water cannons into Masjid Jamek alleys. Police chased a group into the mosque, ordering all, including the media and tourists, to leave.

5.42pm: FRU truck charges down Masjid Jamek road spraying water canon. Anti-riot officers march down the road. Crowd runs into alley to hide. Police move in, and angry commuters shout: "Orang nak balik, apa ni!"

5.39pm: Tension returns to Masjid Jamek as two FRU trucks ring warning bells. People begin to run. Police issue warning to disperse groups. About 50 cops are here. Tear gas expected.

5.37pm: Several men are howling and barking at police officers as a group moves away from Masjid Jamek. About 200 onlookers are near the station. Several hundred are resting inside Masjid Jamek.

5.34pm: Over 300 arrested today have been moved to the FRU depot in Cheras, according to KL Legal Aid lawyers. The lawyers are headed there to provide legal assistance.

Meanwhile, the FRU truck at PAS headquarters appears to be headed to Sogo.

5.31pm: Mood around Masjid Jamek, earlier hit by several rounds of tear gas, slowly picks up. Burger King reopens for business. Big crowd of people just waiting outside both stations. Some traffic police, two police trucks and two jeeps in sight. Road going into city past Masjid Jamek reopened to traffic.

5.19pm: Sources at Jalan Dang Wangi said at least one FRU truck stationed there. Many people on the sidewalk hanging around. Stench of tear gas fired earlier still lingers in the air.

5.18pm: Three FRU trucks, three other FRU vehicles spotted near Public Bank on Jalan Raja Laut. At least 20 cops and FRU there.

5.16pm: All calm at Masjid Negara. Drinks and tidbits seller, when asked how was business today, retorted, "Hari ini apa yang bagus?"

5.10pm: Two UKM students arrested and taken to police station outside the city, said GMI rep. Meanwhile, outside Masjid Negara, two FRU trucks and four police trucks remain. Officers having a meal and are lingering on steps of mosque asking people to leave.

5.07pm: One police car parked opposite PAS headquarters on Jalan Ipoh.

5.03pm: A group of five uniformed police officers near the syariah court were seen having a drink and recounted the chaotic day.

"Yalah, suruh pergi sini, lepas itu pergi sana pulak lepas itu balik lagi. Aduh!"

4.54pm: Three FRU trucks have moved away from palace and are headed into the city.

4.52pm: Met near Istana Negara, Mohd Idrus from KL said: "Apa salahnya orang nak datang, jalan, hantar memo. Ini negara aku jugak. Ini bukan Agong saya kah? Kali ini dah terlebih dah buat macam ni. Apa hal saya nak jalan. Ini tanah aku."

"Actually, apa kita ni? Kita ni negeri polis. Undang ISA seolah-olah komunis. Chin Peng pun tak kasi balik."

4.48pm: Police trying to enter PAS headquarters to arrest dispersed protesters, slamming on glass doors. Tian Chua reminds people cops can't enter without warrant.

4.44pm: Four army trucks, two of which ferrying military personnel, earlier were seen heading towards Istana. While nearer to the palace, seven FRU trucks and almost a hundred police officers are keeping close guard. Very quiet around here with all major roads around the palace closed. Police have erected red metal barriers near the palace.

4.36pm: Four police officers stationed at street corners across form PAS headquarters.

4.30pm: Roads heading to Istana Negara all clear, with no cars or protesters in sight. During the Bersih rally, this street was a sea of yellow as election reform supporters attempted a similar march to the palace to hand a memo to the king.

4.26pm: Road from Brickfields into city near Masjid Negara completely blocked from cars. Exit road open but few cars pass. Turnoff to Istana next to syariah courts blocked.

4.21pm: More than a hundred anti-ISA protesters linger around Masjid Negara and old train station. Expected to regroup for evening prayers.

4.17pm: At PAS headquarters, police marching down street. Some get close to HQ doors but back off.

4.12pm: A female student outside Masjid Negara tells of how water cannon sprayed from the back as the group ran away.

"Takut tadi, dari belakang dia orang sembur lari semua. Masuk hutan, menyorok semua takut kena lagi."

She had come from Kelantan to attend the protest. Dr Badrul Amin, PAS man and former ISA detainee, arrives and shakes hands with supporters.

4.07pm: Quiet at the Masjid Negara front as almost a hundred protesters take shelter inside while about 20 cops watch the streets. Two drinks and keropok lekor vans doing brisk business here.

3.59pm: About 70 protesters are detained by roadside behind Bukit Aman headquarters. Waiting for police trucks to take them away. Two FRU trucks, five police trucks and other jeeps are stationed here. Police say group were walking to city from Masjid Negara and said they tried to escape arrest by hiding in jungle clearing by roadside.

3.49pm: About 30 anti-ISA protesters have sought refuge in Royal Selangor Club.

Meanwhile, at Jalan Raja Laut, PAS leadership gave orders to all protesters to disperse.

3.46pm: Three FRU trucks and road block at roundabout near Bank Rakyat. Fifty cops near Royal Selangor Club. Smells of tear gas. Many people resting in nearby mamak. Police ordered them off the roads.

3.35pm: Similarly quiet around Dataran Merdeka as police lock down major roads into the city. Trains to Masjid Jamek are running but unsure if it stops at that station.

3.32pm: All quiet on Jalan Dang Wangi leading up to Dataran Merdeka, save for several people slowly moving around. Eerie silence, only helicopters and crows can be heard. A far cry from shouting and the sound of police hitting their shields earlier on the same road.

3.30pm: PKR Vice President R Sivarasa arrested near Sogo moments ago.

3.23pm: Anwar Ibrahim, Hadi Awang, Lim Kit Siang head over to PAS headquarters.

3.21pm: Cops run after and grab people near Sogo station. Crowd moving to bridge over river. Three FRU trucks near Bank Negara.

3.19pm: Two FRU and about a hundred police officers near Sogo. Police give five-minute warning to leave. Some cars on parallel road honking. Another person arrested.

3.13pm: FRU now parked along Jalan Raja Laut. Sounds another warning, then marching in.

3.12pm: PAS Unit Amal man says change of plans, awaiting instructions. Most gathering near Jalan Raja Laut, and apparently not many at Istana.

3.11pm: FRU turning into Jalan Dang Wangi, leaving area. Supporters call them names.

3.08pm: Police chase crowds into small alleys and parking lots around Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman vicinity. Helicopters circle above.

3.05pm: Police and protesters play cat and mouse near KWSP building after scattering crowd on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

3.03pm: One arrested, while seven FRU trucks are parked in front of Sogo. Police use loud hailer to order people to disperse. Start chasing people to nearby buildings.

3.01pm: More tear gas fired on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Protesters scatter.

2.59pm: N Gobalakrishnan spotted with back alley crowd near Sogo.

2.58pm: Tense standoff near Sogo. Police just hit with tear gas and water cannon. Stalls nearby closing quickly.

2.55pm: Supporters throw bottles and a broom as crowd stop, loud jeering. Onlookers who have ran into Sogo say tear gas seeping in. FRU moves in with water canon.

2.52pm: Police on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Supporters running away. Shopkeepers peep from behind shutters.

2.49pm: Crowd jeers at police car. Expected to move towards palace but still waiting. Almost all shops on the road are closed.

2.48pm: Back street of Sogo - crowd broken up, more tear gas fired. Trucks coming into Jalan Dang Wangi.

A PAS volunteer says opposition leaders are in a meeting near Sogo. Crowd on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman looking around as a lone police car moves slowly down the road.

2.43pm: Water cannon, tear gas deployed outside Sogo. Most shops are closed. Onlookers with children all running for cover. Crowd moving in all directions.

2.39pm: FRU awaits near Sogo. Crowd planning detour to Istana.

2.37pm: Crowd of more than a thousand at Dang Wangi start moving behind Sogo Unit Amal human shield, chants "Reformasi". No police yet.

2.34pm: GMI chief Syed giving speech to crowd of 1,000. Shouting "Tutup, tutup, tutup, kemta."

Few police here at Jalan Dang Wangi. Tian Chua: "Police can fire tear gas but cannot halang suara rakyat. Tuntut kebebasan!" Crowd responds with cheers.

Tian Chua pledges this is only first rally and will continue until ISA is abolished.

2.31pm: About 1,000 supporters between Jalan Dang Wangi and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Many youths wearing black shirts and red headbands. Some holding banners, some shout "Justice for Teoh Beng Hock".

2.29pm: Many shops on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman en route to Sogo have closed with hundreds of onlookers on the streets. Two police trucks and other vehicles are here. Tense standoff expected. One police truck on the street looks full of detainees.

2.28pm: GMI chair syed Ibrahim rallies crowd at Sogo.

2.27pm: Near Jalan Raja Laut, the crowd stops, and Mat Sabu rallies crowd.

A local PAS member, who was in Masjid Jamek praying, said the atmosphere inside the mosque was calm.

"Tadi masa sembahyang tenang saja, masa keluar tu lain lah. Kena sembur. Unit Amal kena dulu. Saya dah tujuh, lapan kali dah kena sembur."

Meanwhile, a PAS volunteer marshall from Terengganu similarly said the 1,000 strong supporters in the mosque were calm until coming face to face with the police.

"I don't know if the crowd can walk to Sogo (as planned). We heard there are road blocks and orang dah lari dah entah istana atau mana," he said.

2.25pm: Unit Amal walks with protesters. Very loud chants.

2.23pm: After police and FRU push back crowd at Sogo, they come back, and FRU give chase.

2.20pm: Several hundred people at Mydin store near Masjid Jamek chanting. PAS Unit Amal volunteers along the way to Sogo providing directions and salt to ease effects of tear gas. Walking through shop alleys and buildings to Sogo.

2.18pm: At Sogo, FRU and police pushing protesters back.

2.16pm: Sogo crowd now over 3,000 strong. Loh Gwo-Bourne seen. Tear gas fired.

2.13pm: Sogo crowd is about 2,000 strong. Chanting continues, but they stop moving halfway.

2.11pm: More shops at Sogo closed. "Takbir" crowd meets "Reformasi" crowd, and they march together.

2.09pm: Group from Masjid Jamek mosque runs out heading to Sogo. More tear gas inside mosque and station. Protesters run.

2.08pm: At Sogo police form barrier, blocking half the road, but chanting continues.

2.06pm: At Sogo, FRU and police chasing back the crowd. FRU beating on shields. One arrested.

2.04pm: PAS group retreat into mosque as police move in with reinforcements. Forms human shield. Another group gathers outside state on adjacent exit.

At Sogo, supporters appear, chanting "Reformasi". They are followed by FRU.

2.02pm: Police reinforcements called in after tear gas fired at Masjid Jamek. Tension at a fever pitch. Some are gathered outside mosque.

1.57pm: More PAS Unit Amal in human chain and out of mosque. Shout "Allah Huakhbar". Police fire tear gas.

1.55pm: Police violently arrest group, kicks, beats with shield as group runs. Turns ugly. Protesters handcuffed. KL Legal Aid lawyers scream "You're beating them, you're cruel."

1.53pm: A group of 30 people rounded up on the steps of building next to Masjid Jamek. Chanting "Allah Huakhbar. Spokesman, timbalan Pemuda PAS pusat, of group, said peaceful gathering to send memo while police scream warnings to disperse. Tells police "Ini perhimpunan rakyat (This is a citizen's gathering)."

1.49pm: Many tourists and onlookers crowd around to watch the police and snap photos. Police advise people to disperse.

1.46pm: FRU personnel form barrier at Sogo entrance on Jalan Tunku Rahman. Nearby are two trucks.

1.44pm: Police repeat order to disperse. Some 60 officers, some with shields and tear gas guns form lines outside mosque. Prayer time is over and the 2pm gathering time approaches. Tension is high.

1.43pm: Two arrested, one dragged to black Maria at Sogo while screaming at police.

1.42pm: Twenty-five lawyers are at various stations, according to Bar Council Human Rights Chairman Andrew Khoo.

1.38pm: Some 40 uniformed officers gather on street between Masjid Jamek stations ahead of planned 2pm rally.

1.36pm: At Sogo, Kamaruddin, 65, pensioner from Penang, said: "I'm just sitting here."

Total arrest at Masjid Jamek stands at 18. Lawyers are concerned about getting access to detainees.

1.32pm: Lawyers from KL Legal Aid Centre and a civilian photographer dispute arrest of three men with anti-ISA T-shirts. Suspects T-shirts were planted on them because the trio were not holding any bags. Lawyers checking photo and investigating allege"arrest tactic".

1.29pm: Crowds at Masjid Jamek has dispersed but police are keeping watch. Some are praying in the mosque.

1.26pm: Police forming a two-men deep at Sogo entrance of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, now shooing people indoors and clearing the streets.

At Masjid Jamek, three more Malay youths arrested, two wearing white and one in red.

1.22pm: Front entrance of Sogo closed except for a cafe full of people. One K9 unit out.

1.21pm: Police officers approach groups of more than two people asking them to leave. Some commuters continue to trickle out of station. Prayers heard in the background. Mosque closed to public, only police allowed in.

1.20pm: Tourists Laurent, 33, French IT engineer, and Lynn, 29, company administrator from China on the rally: "We didn't know anything about this. We just arrived yesterday. It doesn't change my opinion about Malaysia. I know little about it."

1.19pm: Kapar MP Manikavasagan is outside Masjid Jamek.Helicopters continue to fly low over hot spots.

GMI coordinators instruct protesters to congregate at Sogo. according to the latest Twitter by GMI.

1.17pm: Burger King outlet next to Masjid Jamek station has shut down.

1.16pm: Police shout orders and blow whistles to move protesters on both sides of the road.

1.14pm: There are about 300-400 people entering Masjid Negara with many in black, holding towels and water bottles.

At Sogo, some stores along the street closing. Earlier, people in black maria smiling and waving as they are taken away.

At Masjid Jamek, police officer Mohd Nor issues last warning for crowd to disperse in 15 minutes.

"This gathering has no permit. Disperse or we will disperse you. This is a security area. Leave."

1.10pm: At Sogo, five wearing surgical masks, in black maria, chanting "Reformasi". One holding black T-shirt says: "Walking is wrong, carrying clothes is wrong. What's wrong with you people?"

1.08pm: Anti-riot police with shields move into Masjid Jamek station to disperse crowd. "Siapa tak surai tangkap (Disperse or get arrested)" heard. Stern warning issued.

1.06pm: Anti-ISA activist Norlaila Othman, wife of ISA detainee Mat Sah Mohd Satray arrested. She is among several GMI reps said to be arrested.

1.05pm: More police have moved in, ordering all including the media to disperse from Masjid Jamek. Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid committee starts to mobilise lawyers to assist detainees believed to be held at Travers police station in Cheras.

12.55pm: Fifteen minutes to prayer time, hundreds of Muslims are making their way to Masjid Negara. The 'show' will begin after prayers.

Meanwhile, a big group of reporters crowd near police truck at Masjid Jamek as police search and question two men. Senior police officer Akmal said: "This assembly has no permit. We are now warning you, don't gather here. This area is under watch. Please disperse.

"If we salah tangkap, jangan salahkan polis.

Akmal releases one Malay youth in dark green T-shirt and tells other men to tell their friends to disperse.

12.50pm: Selangor exco Elizabeth Wong, Sonia Randhawa appealing on anti-ISA Twitter account for more lawyers and doctors to go to places where people are held.

12.48pm: Twenty-one people arrested so far at Central Market. A man wearing PAS vest and anti-ISA shirt is the latest arrest at MAsjid Jamek, bringing the total to 16. Lawyer Puspawati Rosman, released after short detention, was arrested for distributing red pamphlets.

12.44pm: Helicopters are making rounds above Masjid Negara. More people are entering the area, under the watchful eyes of the police.

12.42pm: About 30 police officers in Sogo area. One black Maria, one keep and one van stationed there with crowd.

12.38pm: Police truck with 18 detainees have moved off from Dataran Merdeka. Nearest police station is Travers, unconfirmed where detainees will be held. Police have three more trucks on standby. More uniformed police officers arrive.

12.34pm: 18 in police usual at Dataran Merdeka. Two FRU trucks, five police trucks and almost 50 officers in front of old courthouse. Tear gas fired accidentally, though there is no rally participants in sight.

12.31pm: Police K9 unit with two dogs seen near Masjid Jamek station.

12.28pm: Six FRU vehicles spotted near old train station.

12.25pm: Another Malay youth clad in red T-shirt arrested near Masjid Jamek. Total arrested at Masjid Jamek is 11.

12.19pm: At Raja Laut station, three middle aged men from Sungai Buloh checked by police, with one of them wearing a black PAS shirt.

"We just want to go pray, is that illegal?" asked one of the men.

12.15pm: Two groups of about 10 officers each moving towards Masjid India near Masjid Jamek station. Another Malay youth wearing black arrested. Total arrested at Masjid Jamek is 10.

12.14pm: At least 10 arrested near Masjid India bazaar behind Masjid Jamek LRT station.

12.07pm: Police detain and search a Malay man, Kamarul Azman Abdul Latif in his 40s, near Masjid Jamek. He is wearing a red and black T-shirt under a jacket. A Malay man and two women, have been arrested at Masjid Jamek, bringing the total to nine.

12.05pm: Police and press presence have sparked the curiosity of two German tourists wanting to visit Masjid Jamek.

"This is out last day in Kuala Lumpur and we want to take a look around," one of them says.

They have been advised by reporters to stay away from key protest locations in the city today. Other tourists wandering around have moved closer to the mosque to have a look but then walk away.

12.04pm: A group of people wearing facemasks strolling up to the steps to Masjib Negara. There is heavy police presence, but quiet.

11.56am: Police pacing around, chatting at Padang Merbok. No sign of supporters.

11.52am: Sources say atmosphere is quiet with heavy police presence at Sogo shopping centre, where Pakatan Rakyat top leaders are expected to gather ahead of the planned march to Istana to hand memorandum to the King. Police arrested two people near Sogo.

11.40am: Meanwhile, things are much quieter at the pro-ISA gathering area near the Bank Negara KTM station, where five police officers are keeping an eye on a deserted area.

11.38am: At Pasar Seni, eight people have been arrested.

11.30am: Police have arrested another Malay youth at Masjid Jamek LRT station, bringing the number of arrests here to six.

11.23am: Police check five men ­ -- some wearing kopiah and baju Melayu as they walk out of the Masjid Jamek LRT station ­ -- and found Unit Amal (PAS volunteer corps) T-shirts in their bags. Police also questioned an elderly Malay couple as the man was wearing a red shrit. A total of seven people were asked to leave with a warning.

11.20am: Police at Masjid Jamek have arrested two more Malay men in their late 20s. One is wearing a red t-shirt underneath a brown shirt, while another wore an anti-ISA cloth. A total of five people are seen detained inside the police truck.

11.11am: Plainclothes police officers arrest another Malay youth outside Masjid Jamek LRT station, where officers checking his bag found t-shirts supporting the anti-ISA rally.

11.06am: A busy stream of commuters are seen shuffling in and out of the Masjid Jamek LRT station as police continue with random checks.

10.55am: Police have arrested Gerakan Mansuh ISA (GMI) supporter Mohd Rosli, 28, at the Masjid Jamek LRT station. He is said to be wearing a T-shirt supporting the anti-ISA movement.

10.53am: About three FRU trucks and 30 police officers are on standby around Dataran Merdeka. Police have blocked off the area since this morning.

10.42am: About 20 police officers and one police truck are seen outside Pasar Seni. However, there were no signs of marchers gathering here. According to eyewitnesses, police have blocked off the road in Brickfields leading into the city centre, as well as roads around Dataran Merdeka.

10.37am: One eyewitness, Butler, 50, from Kuala Lumpur said that two friends of his have been arrested outside Masjid Negara for loitering.

10.34am: Eyewitnesses say three Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks are stationed at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. An estimated 22 people have been detained near the Masjid Jamek LRT station, said Saha Deva Arunasalam, a lawyer from the Malaysian Bar Council team.

10.27am: Light police presence seen near Holy Rosary Church, Brickfields, with about five officers keeping an eye on the situation.

9.55am: It appears to be business as usual outside the Masjid Jamek LRT station. There is one Black Maria parked outside the station, with about 15 police officers nearby. Two officers are seen searching the bag of a pedestrian outside the station.

9.20am: A major traffic crawl is developing on the Federal Highway heading into the city from the Bangsar turnoff onwards. The police have mounted roadblocks from yesterday on all major roads leading into Kuala Lumpur, including Jalan Travers, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and the SPRINT Highway.
