Counsel Sankara Nair said he was instructed by Anwar to send a notice of demand to the deputy prime minister yesterday over the article with the heading Anwar pengkhianat, putar belit fakta mengenai usaha martabatkan Melayu — Muhyiddin, ("Anwar a traitor, twists facts on efforts to preserve the dignity of the Malays — Muhyiddin") which the opposition leader claimed contained words that were defamatory and libellous of him. Sankara said his client had expressed deep revulsion to an unwarranted statement that he is a traitor to his race, and that it is "wholly untrue and absolutely malicious". "We sent a letter of demand by fax to the DPM's office about 4pm today. Tomorrow (Tuesday), we will deliver the notice," he told a press conference yesterday. Sankara said that Muhyiddin had uttered a defamatory statement during the Umno Sri Gading division delegates' meeting at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) last Sunday that Anwar is also a liar, unfit to hold public office, unprincipled and corrupt. In the article published by Utusan Malaysia, Muhyiddin reportedly called the PKR adviser the biggest traitor to the struggle of the Malays. Sankara said Anwar, who is currently overseas, would be making a full press statement on the matter when he returns and that the opposition leader wanted an apology by the deputy premier to be published in newspapers or media of Anwar's choice. The counsel added that if his client did not receive from Muhyiddin a satisfactory reply within seven days of the receipt of the letter of demand, legal proceedings would be instituted against the deputy premier. Sankara said a similar letter of demand had also been faxed to the managing director of Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd yesterday for an immediate retraction and apology over the article. In the letter of demand, the counsel said his client has the option to sue the deputy premier and the newspaper publisher for damages of RM100 million each for the injury caused to Anwar's reputation irrespective of a satisfactory reply from the parties concerned.
