KUALA LUMPUR: Protesters for 1BlackMalaysia activist Wong Chin Huat testified today that the police knowingly denied their rights during their arrests in May.

Witnesses Ginie Lim and Teh Yee Keong said the police refused to allow them to meet their lawyers despite their requests.

However, the detainees were allowed to keep their handphones, which they used to SMS their lawyers.

According to Lim, she was separated from the other 13 detainees when she protested to having their pictures taken before their statements were recorded.

"After I was separated into a small room, I texted my lawyers Latifah Koya and Puspawati Rosman," Lim told the Suhakam public hearing today.

Lim was testifying in the Suhakam inquiry into the arrests and detention of five lawyers of the Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Centre.

According to Teh, he found out that his lawyer, Puspawati, was also arrested while he was consulting her.

"During the interview, I called Puspawati to ask whether I should sign a certain form. However, she told me 'I am also arrested' and I ended the call then," said the RockNews.com reporter.

The lawyers — Puspawati, Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, Murnie Hidayah Anuar, Ravinder Singh and Syuhaini Safwan — were arrested on May 7 while coming to the aid of 14 protesters at the Brickfields police station.

The protesters were arrested after holding a candlelight vigil for Wong and protesting what had transpired at the Perak assembly on May 7. Wong was arrested and detained for organising the 1BlackMalaysia campaign.

The three-day Suhakam inquiry is chaired by commissioners Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Datuk Dr Michael Yeoh and Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria.
