To back his assertion, Zahid showed journalists a copy of a March 28 letter to the Bar Council disciplinary board from Koperasi Pekebun Getah that sought to withdraw all complaints against Rohaizat as he had settled all claims and monies due to the cooperative. "He settled whatever was owed to them and there were also no police reports against him nor has he any criminal records," he said. Zahid maintained that Rohaizat was disbarred due to his partner's embezzlement of the client's money and lambasted PAS for questioning Rohaizat's candidacy. It was BN's prerogative to select its candidate, he said. "Even though he was struck off by the Bar Council, he has good qualities and values especially where family is concerned. We do not question the opposition on their candidate, and we can also do that. "We can also ask why (Mohd) Salleh Man has not won any election even though he had contested so many times," he said. Zahid also called on the BN election machinery to explain the matter to the voters. When asked about rumours of his disbarment, Rohaizat had said that he would give his comments at an "appropriate" time. Yesterday, during a walkabout at Taman Sama Gagah, he said all that mattered was that he had been declared eligible to contest in the by-election. "I will focus my attention on campaigning for this by-election as I have been declared a candidate. The opposition can make any allegation against me, but I do not have to respond to their character assassination efforts," he said. With a week to go to polling on Aug 25, BN and PAS campaigns shifted into high gear today, with both candidates focusing on Chinese majority areas, particularly Kampung Cross Street and the Sama Gagah township. Chinese voters, who make up 25.85% of the constituency's electorate, could determine the outcome of the contest if Malay votes (72.36%) are split. Rohaizat started his house-to-house visits at 9.30am and performed his mid-day prayer at the Bukit Indera Muda mosque. He then visited several Kemas projects, Kampung Paya, Tanah Liat, Kubang Semang, Kampung Guar Ipoh and Permatang Janggus before going on a walkabout and having dinner at Taman Sama Gagah. Salleh's campaign meanwhile took him from Kampung Petani to Kampung Pelet, Kampung Cross Street, Kubang Semang and ended at Taman Sama Gagah in the evening.
