PM: MCA does not want intervention

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak played down talk today about his intervening in MCA's simmering leadership war, saying that most MCA members did not want intervention in the party's internal problems.

The prime minister was asked to comment on calls by MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha for Najib, who is president of Umno and Barisan Nasional chairman, to step in to "advise" rival factions within MCA.

MCA could see two extraordinary general meetings (EGM) convened in the coming weeks as the result of the sacking of its deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek for tarnishing MCA's image in a sex-tape scandal in early January last year.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat fired the first shot on Aug 31, when he directed MCA secretary general Datuk Wong Foon Meng to convene an EGM within 30 days.

According to Ong, the EGM was to seek a vote of confidence from party delegates to resolve the current problems plaguing the party, including the sacking of Chua, the handling of the controversial Port Klang Free Zone issue and other leadership decisions.

Ong's move is widely seen as pre-emptive strike to thwart plans for an EGM proposed by Chua's supporters.

Today Datuk Seri Tan Chai Ho, who is leading the "Save MCA" campaign aligned to Chua, submitted a petition for an EGM signed by 921 delegates.

Under MCA's constitution, an EGM can be called by its central delegates if there was a minimum of 800 delegates supporting the meeting.

Chua's supporters are looking to convene the EGM to nullify Chua's sacking and to pass a vote of no-confidence against Ong.
