Speaking to reporters after a two-and-a-half hour meeting, Najib said Umno's supreme council had endorsed the constitutional amendments, particularly the abolition of the quota system. "The supreme council agree that the changes to its election system are necessary and must steer towards abolishing money politics," Najib said. The proposed changes should also make the the party's election process more transparent and democratic as well as enable Umno to be more inclusive, Najib said. However, the prime minister said Umno's supreme council had yet to finalise its decision on changes in the number of delegates eligible to cast votes in determining the party's leadership because the decision involved logistical considerations. "But it will be far more than the current 2,500 delegates. It could involve thousands of additional delegates," Najib said. The current system that necessitates each candidate being endorsed by a set number of divisions prior to being admitted as a candidate has been blamed for encouraging money politics while being unreflective of the grassroots' aspirations. The two committees tasked with the amendments are the Umno Constitution Amendments Main Committee, headed by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, and the Umno Constitution Amendments Technical Committee. Najib added that proposals from Umno's Youth and Wanita wings would also be taken into consideration at the party's political-bureau meeting, where the proposed amendments are expected to be finalised. Umno is set to unveil its proposed constitutional amendments during its extraordinary general meeting scheduled from Oct 13 to 16.
