PUTRAJAYA: Mas Selamat Kastari, who was on the run in Malaysia for a year before his arrest, has been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for two years.

"We've decided to detain him as he is a threat to Malaysia and Singapore," Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak told reporters today. "And we want to gather more information from him."

On whether the government had discussed the matter with Singapore during his visit to the republic last week, Najib said: "No, we did not discuss this.

"This is Malaysia's decision. But if he were caught in Singapore, he would definitely be detained too. I can't see Singapore releasing Mas Selamat, can you?" he said.

Asked on the reason for the alleged Jemaah Islamiyah leader's detention, Najib said: "He's a threat to national security for Malaysia and Singapore. I'm sure Singapore feels the same way."

On whether Malaysia had informed the Singapore government of Mas Selamat's detention under the ISA, Najib said: "No, I haven't. But I'm sure the authorities are in close contact with one another. But you'll have to check with the police if they have informed their counterparts."

Mas Selamat had slipped into the country a few days after his escape from a high-security detention centre in Singapore last year.

He had been hiding in Johor before his arrest early this month.

The 48-year-old is accused of plotting to fly a plane into Singapore's Changi Airport and strike at the US embassy and other Western targets in the island republic.

The alleged terrorist was caught in 2006 before his escape last year.
