KUALA LUMPUR: Former MCA vice president Datuk Seri Fong Chan Onn threw his support behind embattled president Datuk Seri Ong Tee in supporting Ong's move to call for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to decide if the central committee should have fresh polls.

"What Ong is doing is right. The best way is to have new party election where new leaders can have new mandate," Fong said in a press conference today.

He said Ong must be given the opportunity to hold the EGM at the shortest time possible.

Fong also indicated the central committee has lost the confidence of the central delegates.

"It is not wise for them to select among themselves," he said, adding that the central committee and Ong acted collectively in invoking disciplinary action against ousted deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He urge the central committee to give the rights and responsibility back to the central delegates to decide on the party leadership.

"In this state of dis-unity, I urge the central committee to act in the interest of the party.

"We can hold on to any legal provision but please don't prolong the agony for members and party," said Fong, stressing that any shortcut solutions would not have the mandate of the members to lead the party.
