KUALA LUMPUR: Former Perak menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said yesterday Perak's Pakatan Rakyat (PR) assemblymen would attend the Oct 28 Perak state legislative assembly sitting but would not table its proposed budget for the state.
Nizar told a press conference that PR's 28 representatives would attend the assembly sitting, having received the notice issued by former Perak speaker V Sivakumar, whom PR maintains is the rightful speaker. Sivakumar issued the notice following an earlier letter sent out by Barisan Nasional-appointed (BN) Perak Speaker Datuk S Ganesan. The Perak state assembly's last sitting on May 7 saw hours of escalating tensions and commotion as both sides sought to stake its claim as the rightful government of Perak. At the height of the drama, Sivakumar was forcefully removed from the Speaker's seat by plain-clothes officers and kept in a room near the assembly hall until proceedings were over. Asked if Sivakumar would attempt occupy the Speaker's seat during the Oct 28 sitting, Nizar quipped, "Sivakumar is the legitimate Speaker. Where else would he sit?" On whether similar chaos could be expected during the sitting, Nizar said, "We don't know. Maybe." Nizar, who is Pasir Panjang assemblyman and Bukit Gantang parliamentarian, added that PR representatives would abide by Sivakumar's instruction pertaining to seating arrangements in the hall. Assemblymen from the ruling party conventionally sit to the Speaker's right while the opposition occupies the left portion of the hall. Former Perak executive council member Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham then questioned the status of the Perak state budget, to be tabled by BN, given that the Federal Court has yet to hear Nizar's appeal. "If BN continues with the budget and if the Federal Court rules in favour of Pakatan Rakyat, what will happen to the budget?" Ngeh asked. After a prolonged legal battle, the Federal Court will on Nov 5 hear Nizar's bid to be declared the rightful menteri besar of Perak. Meanwhile, PR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier told the press conference that PR would soon make announcements on its long awaited "common platform". The opposition leader said he was not worried about relations between PR's top leadership but "would not tolerate" any statements from state-level members that can cause "uncertainty". PR will hold its convention on Dec 12 and 13 to be attended by 500 delegates from each of its three partner parties, Anwar said. When asked, Anwar said PR leaders did not discuss Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR) tiff in Sabah where the local leaders reportedly opposed the appointment of PKR vice-president Azmin Ali as Sabah PKR state chief. Speculation of a feud between Azmin and PKR supreme council member Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, who has since taken a six-month sabbatical from the party following the party's decision barring him from travelling to Sabah and Sarawak, has been rife . "Zaid is here, Azmin is here. There is no problem," Anwar said, pointing to both men who were sitting on opposite ends of the table along with other PR leaders.
