A central committee (CC) member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said such an EGM should be considered as it would deter the purported "third force" from seizing power. He added that president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and ousted deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek were elected based on their ability and track record. "No doubt both Ong and Chua have their weaknesses. However, they will form a dynamic leadership for the party if they could team up," he told The Edge Financial Daily today. He pointed out that while re-election of the central committee was also a viable option, it would need the resignation of two-thirds of the CC members which had now been complicated with some overzealous leaders who wanted an easy way out to helm the leadership. "Please remember the crisis in the mid-80s between Neo Yee Pan and Tan Koon Swan took 20 months to be settled. Now, just days after the Oct 10, 2009, EGM, there are people who already want the leaders to pass on the baton," said the seasoned politician. According to him, the Oct 10 EGM might have suggested that both Ong and Chua should step down but legal experts have also reminded the party that the results of the EGM were more of an evaluation of the current leadership than a dismissal. He added that should an EGM be carried out to reaffirm the election of the CC members, the crisis might not be protracted and would ensure that the Chinese community continued to have faith in MCA, which has a good network of foundations, trust funds and chambers of commerce. On a letter believed to be orchestrated by deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai for the CC to express their opinions, the CC member challenged the health minister to reveal the contents of the letter, which he claimed was in fact a letter to pressure Ong to step down as president. "The letter is tantamount to a coup. For sure, someone is lobbying to be president of the party with such a letter," said the CC member who had read it. Liow has clarified that the letter is merely for the CC members to express their opinions, and not to topple Ong.
