KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA Nov 28 extraordinary general meeting (EGM) will go ahead as planned, ongoing mediation by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin notwithstanding, EGM requisitionist Wong Nai Chee said.

Wong, who is aligned to vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, said the EGM would not be called off pending a decision on the date for the proposed party elections.

"The press conference today is to give a clear direction to our central delegates that we intend to carry on with the EGM as originally planned.

"At the moment, our leaders are still having discussions as to the possible details for the fresh elections. So far, we reckon those details have not materialised. With this kind of uncertainties going on, we feel it is only fair we give a clear direction to the central delegates that we carry on with the Nov 28 EGM as planned," said Wong

Wong added he was hopeful that more than 50% of central delegates would turn up for the EGM.

Asked if he was doubtful that the factions would be able to come to a decision on a date, Wong said: "That is why we are uncertain. But what we are confident of is if there are no constructive answers, we are going on with the EGM. That is what we are confident of."

On whether he was willing to compromise his December deadline for party polls, Wong said December would be most suitable as the party also had yet to hold its annual general assembly for the year.

"It is appropriate and convenient for all so that the central delegates don't have to travel twice. Perhaps the prime minister will come and officiate it. We can have a fresh start," he said, adding that year-end holidays could affect attendance but delegates would have to make a decision in the interest of MCA.

Wong also said it was not right for secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng to write to the central delegates to ask them not to attend the EGM.

"There is no reason for him to write such a letter and we don't think that is right under the party constitution," he said.

Wong also said that they had collected RM131,556 to date and would ask an independent accounting firm on how to dispose of the money if for some reason, the EGM was not held.
