KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today said it was PAS that mooted the idea of a unity government and that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government was still capable of ruling without the collaborative efforts.

Najib reiterated that BN positively received PAS' move for joint discussions, adding that the ruling coalition remained open to any efforts that could benefit the country.

"It was PAS that expressed their desire to reach a consensus (kata sepakat) and the term unity government came from PAS themselves, not from us (BN)," Najib said.

When asked, Najib said the failure to hold PAS-Umno talks would not be a loss to Malays.

"I hope we'll be very measured in whatever we do whether we have talks or not. What's important is we manage our differences," Najib said.

The prime minister also said the BN government was still capable to run the country without any unity government and can implement its reform agenda.

Asked if Umno would entertain future unity proposals, Najib said: "Anything is possible in politics."

Recent proposals for PAS-Umno unity talk came under intense fire from Pakatan Rakyat and the Islamic party's spiritual adviser Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat.
