Update Tony Pua thrown out for a day

KUALA LUMPUR: Tony Pua (Petaling Jaya Utara-DAP) became the latest MP to be thrown out of the Dewan Rakyat for defying the speaker’s order.

The incident happened during the debate on the motion of operating expenditure involving restructured ministries where Pua stood up to pose a question while Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak-BN) was debating.

In a press conference in parliament lobby, Pua said he did not know why he was thrown out of the House as he had merely stood up to seek clarification.

“I wanted to ask whether the transport minister has replied on who was responsible for the Port Klang Free Zone fiasco and the punishment to be taken. I also wanted to ask about Proton that is making losses even in good times. I stood up, waited and there was no signal from Tajuddin for me to sit down or he wasn’t going to give me the floor. So I waited for him to finish,” explained Pua.

He said Speaker Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar then scolded him for continuing to stand up when Tajuddin refused to give him (Pua) the floor.

“The only thing that I fought with the speaker is that Tajuddin has not given me the floor. If he told me that he (Tajuddin) is not giving me the floor, I would have sat down,” said Pua, adding that he also told the Speaker not to scold him as he should not be faulted.

Pua claimed that after he had sat down, Wan Junaidi made cryptic remarks about misbehaving MPs.

“I stood up again and said that his statement was not fair as I have not done anything wrong. He got unhappy and told me to leave for the rest of the day,” Pua said, adding that the government bench made much noise during Lim Kit Siang’s (Ipoh Timur-DAP) speech but the speaker failed to control the House.

When met during the lunch break, Wan Junaidi said when he assumes the Speaker’s chair, he does not want any defiance.

“Objections to speaker’s order cannot be made. That is important,” he said.

Wan Junaidi cited the instance where Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (Bintulu-BN) got angry but the anger was not directed at the Speaker, but at Lim instead.

“When people don’t follow my instruction, I have no other way. I don’t want to quarrel like Bintulu or Kinabatangan or Pasir Salak. He must know the difference of instructions from Speaker and quarrels amongst the MPs. They are two different things,” he said, adding that Pua should have known the House rules.

“If the member of the House does not know the rules, then learn first. I should not be faulted in this instance. I have been in the Dewan for 20 years. I was also rough (kasar) previously but when the speaker asks me to sit, I will sit. This is the rule that we all should follow,” said Wan Junaidi, adding that he would not retract his ruling.
