KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will leave its door open to form a unity government that was mooted by PAS, but stressed that such a government would not neglect the rights and interest of the non-Malays, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said although the PAS leadership had come forward to shoot down the unity government idea, the stand might not have reflected the Islamic party’s grassroots and several top leaders, which have shown interest in the unity government concept.

The premier said there were many Muslims who had a common position to champion Islam, adding that it would be beneficial should PAS and Umno strived for Muslim and Malay unity, as provided by the religion.

"Don’t let politics take precedence over what religion has taught us," he told a press conference June 24 after officiating the "Baitulmal National Convention 2009".
