PETALING JAYA: The public can scrutinise Selangor state executive councillors' (exco) asset transactions occurring during their term of office from Friday, March 13.

In a statement yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the assets declarations would be made public on the official Selangor government website (www.selangor.gov.my) from Friday.

This exercise, involving the 10 Selangor excos and Khalid, would include the disclosure of property, shares and large sums of cash transfers during their period in office, from their swearing-in on March 24, 2008 to the present.

Khalid said the state government had decided, upon obtaining legal advice, that it would not reveal assets owned by exco members prior to holding office, as the state was unable to provide security for the exco and their family members and there was no insurance policy to address this concern.

However, the exco members had disclosed the information privately to the Menteri Besar's Office and the information could be released for legitimate reasons, subject to the conditions and approval of the special select committee on competence, accountability and transparency (Selcat), Khalid said.

"The state would like to stress that the objective of asset declaration is to ensure that those holding the highest office within the Selangor government would not take advantage of their positions to unlawfully or unethically acquire assets, financial or otherwise," Khalid said.

He added the declarations would enable exco members to make unbiased and impartial decisions on policy, thus enhancing the credibility of the state government.
