MANEK URAI: PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa confirmed that the Kelantan PAS liaison committee barred him from making an appearance at the Manek Urai by-election, but had requested him to come assess the situation.

Meeting reporters after performing special prayers with Mursyidul Am Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat at the Kampung Perial mosque, Nasharuddin said that he was asked to come to campaign by Nik Aziz but could not make it sooner as he had to undergo an intestinal surgery.

He also said that he could not come along with other top leadership on nomination day because he was unwell.

Two days ago, Nik Aziz said that he told Nasharuddin not to come because he does not want him to be boo-ed by supporters.

Asked on his elegance silence, he said he was a victim of wrongful perception and that people have gone to portray him in a different light.

Nasharuddin, who was discharged from the hospital yesterday and arrived in Manek Urai late last night told reporters that he planned to hold a press conference to clarify matters, including the unity talks with Umno, after he has recovered.

"I will work to change the perception that some quarters have on me," he said.

On the by-election, Nasharuddin said local issues take precendence here, and his initial absence is unlikely to affect the results.

On the oil royalty issue that has been much-talked about, he said Barisan Nasional (BN) has gone to town with it but it would not have any impact on the voters as it was merely justifying BN's actions.

"BN has no issues. Umno challenged me to a ceramah but I don't need the challenge because the party machinery will make the arrangements. They have no issues, and that is why they have to resort to challenge me," he said.

To a question, he said politics in PAS is confined to the Islamic context.

"We are educated to engage in politics in the Islamic context," he said, adding that the same approach is employed for economics also.

"Politicking has brought new challenges to PAS and I am confident PAS is matured enough to handle the challenges.

"Politics is about principles. Principles must remain but approach and methodology may change," said Nasharuddin.
