KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) is conducting a post-mortem on its narrow defeat in Tuesday's Manek Urai by-election in Kelantan, said Manek Urai BN election director Datuk Mustapa Mohamed.

The findings are expected to be tabled at the Umno supreme council meeting next month, he said.

"Although we lost, it was a moral victory for BN. This is a vote of confidence for our prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak). We will not neglect the people in Manek Urai," Mustapa told a press conference here today.

PAS retained the Manek Urai state assembly seat with a razor-thin majority of 65 votes. PAS candidate Mohd Fauzi Abdullah secured victory by garnering 5,348 votes, edging BN's Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat who obtained  5,283 votes.

The 65-vote majority for PAS is a significant reduction from its 1,352-vote majority in the general election last year. Manek Urai is one of the four state seats in the Kuala Krai parliamentary enclave which also includes Dabong, Guchil and Mengkebang.

Mustapa, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, also hopes that the Election Commission would consider his proposal to disallow political parties from campaigning on nomination and polling days.

Apart from preventing a tense polling day climate, the proposal was also aimed at reducing government expenses and traffic congestion.
