KUALA LUMPUR: Karpal Singh handed to the palace yesterday a copy of the voice recording purportedly of Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Azmi admitting to bribing court officials in yet another attempt to prompt action on the matter.Karpal said he was providing the Agong with evidence to strengthen his earlier request for the Agong to hold an emergency meeting with the Conference of Rulers to discuss the matter and to withdraw consent for the appointment of Zaki as Chief Justice. To a question, Karpal said he had not given the Agong an ultimatum as he "expected" the Agong to act based on the evidence. "I am calling for the Chief Justice to step down and be charged for corruption," Karpal said The DAP chairman, who was denied entry to the palace, passed an envelope containing a letter and a tape to a palace clerk who received the items on behalf of the Agong's secretary. It is learnt that the Agong is currently overseas. The recording was of Zaki's speech in Kuching on Nov 7, 2008 where Zaki purportedly admitted to bribing court staff when he was a practicing lawyer in 1987. "Tan Sri Zaki has not denied the allegations and I have challenged him to sue me. If the Chief Justice thinks what I'm saying is defamatory he should sue me and clear his name," Karpal said. Zaki had previously clarified the allegations, claiming that the media had misinterpreted his words at the Kuching conference. Speaking to the press outside the palace, Karpal also lamented the lack of investigation into the matter following a police report he made on Nov 13, 2008. Karpal, who is also Bukit Gelugor MP, said his allegations against the Chief justice was dismissed by parliament. He had played the recording during a press conference at parliament's lobby on Feb 18 and later when parliament was in session. Meanwhile, commenting on his ''attack'' in parliament yesterday, Karpal said the committee set up to investigate the incident could take appropriate action under the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952 while lambasting the police for not protecting him during the incident. Yesterday afternoon, Karpal was prevented from entering the Dewan Rakyat when he was mobbed by about 30 Umno Youth members demanding an apology from Karpal, who had accused Umno Youth of being responsible for the death threat and bullets he had received by mail last week. On Khairy Jamaluddin, who has recently exchanged salvos with the senior politician, Karpal said "I have no time for political juveniles." ''I will not be intimidated by anyone,'' Karpal added.
